The start-up HR mistake
Almost every growing business makes the same mistake: they treat HR as something to deal with later, when they're "big enough." Then they hit 15 or 20 employees and realise they've been building on sand. Contracts are inconsistent or missing, there are no policies, managers are making it up as they go, and suddenly there's a complex employment situation with no process to handle it.
Getting HR right from day one is one of the best investments a start-up can make.
What "people ops" actually means for early-stage businesses
People operations (people ops) is just a more modern way of saying "everything that makes your team work well." At the early stage, it covers:
- How you hire and onboard people
- How you set expectations and measure performance
- How you handle problems when they arise
- The documents and policies that govern employment
- How you pay people and manage their benefits
None of this needs to be complex when you have 5 people. But it needs to exist.
The foundations every start-up needs
Solid employment contracts
Not a template from the internet. Contracts tailored to your business, your sector, and your needs. These are the foundation of the employment relationship — get them right from the start.
An employee handbook
A handbook doesn't need to be 200 pages. A clear, practical document covering the key policies (holiday, sickness, flexible working, expenses, disciplinary process) gives everyone the same reference point and protects you legally.
A hiring process
Even at the early stage, you need some consistency in how you hire. Structured interviews, skills assessments, and reference checks don't have to be complex — but doing them consistently reduces bias, improves quality of hire, and protects you against discrimination claims.
A way to handle problems
Before your first employee even starts, know what you'll do if something goes wrong. Have a grievance process. Have a disciplinary process. Know where you'll go for advice when you need it.
Scaling: when you need more
As you grow, new needs emerge:
- 5–15 employees: Performance management, HR software, a proper onboarding process
- 15–30 employees: Management training, formal development pathways, regular employee engagement measurement
- 30+ employees: HR strategy, succession planning, leadership development, possibly a part-time in-house HR person supported by external expertise
The outsourced advantage for start-ups
Start-ups can't afford a full-time senior HR professional, but they can afford a retained HR partner who gives them access to the same quality of expertise — on demand, for a fraction of the cost. That's exactly what we do. We become your people team, scaling with you as you grow.
